Internet & eSIM (The Firewall)

Choose roaming, eSIM, local SIM, maps, translation, and offline backups before mainland network restrictions surprise you.

Mainland China has fast mobile networks, but the internet experience is different. Some foreign services are restricted, some maps are inaccurate, and many local services assume you can receive SMS. Your best setup is built before arrival.

Install before you fly

  • Set up your eSIM or roaming package while you still have reliable access to email and app stores.
  • Download offline translation packs.
  • Save hotel names and addresses in Chinese.
  • Install Alipay, WeChat, Railway 12306, Trip.com, Amap, and a translation app.
  • Save your airline, hotel, embassy/consulate, and insurance contacts offline.

Maps and navigation

Google Maps is unreliable for mainland navigation. Use Apple Maps if it works well on your device and roaming setup; otherwise use Amap or Baidu Maps. Amap is Chinese-first, but its transit, walking, and ride-hailing context is far more locally accurate.

Messaging and recovery

WeChat is the local default for hotels, drivers, restaurants, and guides. Keep your normal messaging app available for people back home, but do not assume it will work consistently on local networks. For account recovery, your most important asset is the phone number that receives bank, Alipay, WeChat, and email codes.

Failure modes

  • Your phone is eSIM-incompatible or carrier-locked.
  • A foreign app store, email provider, or map app is unreachable after landing.
  • You cannot receive SMS for wallet verification.
  • Your local SIM gives fast data but cannot access the services you expected.
  • Your battery dies while your payment, translation, and hotel address are all phone-only.

Bring a small power bank, write your hotel address in Chinese somewhere offline, and keep one recovery method that does not depend on mobile data.
